Emergency School Board Work Session
In which the wishy washy board decided to undecide to take the
option of closing Georgetown Elementary off the list of viable options
Not close Georgetown Elementary? That's what they said last week

3/3/05

Despite an informal and very public decision to take the option of closing ANY school off the list of options to consider, tonight the school board informally denounced that decision (4-2, with Dana Abrahamson and Laurie Beckel voting against), and even included a few more options.

Dana Abrahamson, west-end Clear Creek Board member, has represented our town well and we expect that she will continue to put forth the well grounded arguments.

Not surprisingly, the School Board chose not to allow public comment for tonight's meeting. The meeting was well attended by Georgetown citizens, parents, the town administrator and Selectman Cora Lou Anderson. A letter written by the town Mayor, and two letters written by parents were presented and dispersed to the board at the end of the meeting.

Ex-board member, now County Commissioner, Kevin O'Malley stated, from his seat in the audience, that the school board should decide "right now whether or not the budget crisis was going to fall on 1/3 of the district (Georgetown) or on the district as whole", evenly and fairly. The school board chose to ignore his suggestion entirely. So, clearly, the majority of the school board has decided that it is a viable option to place the entire district's budget crisis on the town of Georgetown (along with Silver Plume and Empire students).

Jerking a community's chain. Not a good way to get support and help. Due to the lack of confidence in the waffling school board, a group of Georgetown citizens are actively pulling together the plans and funding for a Georgetown Charter school -which will essentially take our school's funding out of the district. Currently, Georgetown contributes more tax dollars to the district than they actually get in return to support our school. A charter school will put those funds in the hands of folks who have vested interests in our school and community.

Georgetown Elementary
At Serious Risk of Closure!
(again 3/3/05)

The Clear Creek County School Board has announced that they are facing a deficit of $442,000.00 for the 2005-2006 school year.

In the beginning it seemed as though the school board was focusing on the closure of our community's only school. After many public meetings and a well represented and organized Georgetown armed with petitions, logical argument and heartfelt pleas, the Board of Education decided to take any option regarding the closure of our school off the list of budget items to be considered. However, yesterday evening (3/01/05), the Board of Education hosted a "bash Georgetown" forum, complete with hecklers and what one observer described as "mob like" behaviour and have since called an Emergency Work Session Thursday, March 3, 5pm to reconsider the finalization of the budget options that they have already publicly decided on. Who is supposed to be running these meetings? And why is she allowing 15 minutes per public statement when it's about pro-closing Georgetown Elementary, when she only allowed 5 minutes per speaker when the pro-Georgetown troops were in attendance? Until this meeting, we had a huge respect for the board and their diligence with the issue at hand. They argued and then they voted. It may not be a decision of official record, but it was a public proclamation (see the Clear Creek Courant 3/3/05). They voted to not close Georgetown Elementary. To go wishy washy on this vital decision will undoubted reflect on the board's credibility.
