The statement made by (soon to depart) county commissioner, Joanne Sorensen, in paragraph 3 clearly shows how twisted government thinking is. If the Colorado Historical Society hadn't decided that THEY had to own all of the operating historic equipment (that currently does not exist) then our county's most significant historic asset would not be in danger of being destroyed, we would not be spending hundreds of thousands of State Higher Education money to replace the irreplaceable and local businesses would not be facing the obvious fall-out this summer, which of course means higher taxes for the rest of us (and, yes, Lee Behrens would like to change our terrirorial charter so he can raise our taxes). No, what the county and all interested parties should be doing right now, is lobbying to have the responsibility and ownership taken out of the brazen and reckless hands of the Colorado Historical Society (
see audit and Leavonworth report) and into the hands of an established railroading non-profit entity, one who can value and appreciate the dedication of the The Georgetown Loop, Inc. families.
